Currently, Limón Aid is working with a Catholic nun Madre Leonarda Martines Lali who runs the existing orphanage in Limón to improve the lives of orphans in and around the town. The current situation is as follows:
The lucky orphans are the over 40 orphans crammed into one rundown Limón orphanage.
There are over 100 orphans in the area living on the streets or in poor conditions who do not have money for food, clothes or schooling. Nor do they get the love and caring they need.
There is very little to no support from the government.
Most of the children are orphans because their parents died of AIDS.
In the past, Limón Aid helped remodel the existing orphanage by painting, re-screening windows and doors, and patching the leaky roof. Also, we gave numerous supplies including toys, stuffed animals, mattresses, cribs, clothing, bicycles, and school supplies to the orphans. Still, what has been done is not enough.
Leonarda visits with the families whose parents are dying of AIDS and whose children will soon be orphans. She envisions and works tirelessly to construct a new, better home for all the orphans and soon-to-be orphans in the area. They have been given the land and have the workers to build the orphanage. Yet more important they have the dream, love, leadership and determination to make it happen.
In partnership with Leonarda's Home of Hope, Inc. our goal is to construct a new orphanage in Limón that will be called Leonarda's Home of Hope in honor of Leonarda. When finished Leonarda's Home of Hope will get the orphans out of an overcrowded building, off the streets, and into a loving environment.
